What the Hemp?! How Hemp Oil Could Help Your Anxiety

What the Hemp! How Hemp Oil Could Help Your AnxietyDid you know that nearly 18% of the American population experience some form of generalized anxiety disorder? Amidst a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and lack of socialization, more and more Americans are struggling with anxiety and the state of their mental health. Even as campaigns for mental health awareness pop up and prescription medication is filled, patients are often still left wondering if there is a better approach.

We take pride in educating our patients on alternative, holistic treatment options that are safe and effective. This month, we want to highlight an alternative for those “happy pills”–hemp oil! According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse, this type of oil “has shown therapeutic efficacy in a range of animal models of anxiety and stress, reducing both behavioral and physiological (e.g., heart rate) measures of stress and anxiety.”

How does hemp oil work?

Hemp seed oil comes from exactly where you would expect: the seeds of hemp plants. While it is possible for oil to be created from all parts of the hemp plant, that which derives from the seeds often contains the most optimal levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are key ingredients when it comes to reducing anxiety levels. Hemp oil works with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to promote optimal function throughout the mind and body. In other words, the ECS works as a buffer for emotional and physical responses in the body, and hemp oil helps promote ideal functionality.

Will hemp oil get me “high”?

Despite the controversy surrounding oil derived from the hemp plant, hemp seed oil will not get you “high” like some other products derived from the hemp plant. With hemp oil, you can receive all of the same scientific and health benefits of hemp seed (in this case, reduced levels of anxiety) without experiencing the negative psychological effects that often accompany other hemp products containing large amounts of THC.

However, it is important to note that some types of hemp oil can contain trace amounts of THC. This amount is typically not enough to have any psychoactive effects, but can be something to keep in mind if you are subject to frequent drug testing. Many distributors do offer Broad Spectrum or THC-free options, but it is important to do ample research on each brand’s third-party testing, farming practices, and extraction methods before purchasing.

What should I look for when purchasing hemp oil?

As CBD and other hemp products are not regulated by the FDA, not all hemp products are created equally and those with the purest quality will be most effective in treating your condition.

As previously mentioned, it is extremely important to do ample research on the dispensary and/or brand before making a purchase.

You will want to know where and how the hemp is grown, how it was extracted, and testing information from third-party labs. Until hemp products are regulated, nearly anything goes in the booming market for CBD and other products, so you want to be sure you are purchasing a pure, quality product that has been carefully handled rather than a product that consists mostly of fillers or one that has been improperly handled. Either of these variables, amongst others, can decrease the likelihood that it will be effective in treating your condition.
